Michael Cortez is the lead interpreter at the Mecklenburg County Courthouse. He accepted his award on May 5, 2022 during Law Day.
One of the nominators said, "I would like to nominate Michael Cortez, the lead interpreter at the Mecklenburg County Courthouse. He works tirelessly to ensure access to the courts, not only for Spanish speaking individuals but for anyone who would benefit from interpreter services. Thanks to his experience and expertise, he seamlessly connects people to what is happening in the courtroom. He serves and enhances all 5 criteria that govern consideration of this award, because of how crucial excellent language services are. However, he most champions criteria (4), contributing to the effective functioning of our institutions of government. I could not imagine working in the courthouse without his commitment and dedication to making sure that every person has the language services they need to understand and participate in the legal process. He is a true joy to work with, humble and hardworking, and often goes unrecognized because he is constantly on the move, from courtroom to courtroom. His service increases trust, access, and effectiveness of our court system without compromise."
Mr. Cortez's acceptance speech:
This is the best Cinco de Mayo I have ever had!
I feel honored and privileged to receive this award. I would like to thank those individuals who first, thought about nominating me, and secondly, those who selected me for this award. It means a lot to know that your diligence does not go unnoticed. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my family.
My goal has always been to do my work with real delight and to derive satisfaction from doing it well. Proverbs 22:29 asks an interesting question: “Have you seen a man skillful at his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before men.” I have the honor to stand before kings (judges) every workday and to work around many great professionals and colleagues. I am proud to serve this community and to help those who are limited English proficient to have access to equal justice. Colossians 3:23 states my motivation to serve: “Whatever you do, [Whatever your task may be], work from the soul [that is, put in your very best effort], as [something done] for the Lord and not for men.” (Amplified Bible)
Once again, I am grateful for this recognition and thank you for your attention. In conclusion, I would like to cite the words of the late comedian and actor Robin Williams in the movie “Bicentennial Man” which echo my personal sentiments: “One is glad to be of Service.”
